Yes, sadly pundits and prognosticators are already discussing, wide-eyed and cheerfully, who this morning’s assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto will benefit in America’s 2008 campaign. To be perfectly honest, this kind of thing really makes me ill.
Scarborough’s out there claiming that this helps Mr. 9/11, mayor Rudy Giuliani, and Hillary Clinton, I guess because she’s perceived as the Dem hawk. Others claim that this helps McCain, because he’s a veteran and supported the Iraq war all along. The incident is somehow supposed to hurt Huckabee and Obama. Whatever.
Enough’s enough. This helps the terrorists and hurts Pakistan. That should be all. This should have no impact on the U.S. race whatsoever. It certainly shouldn’t give Giuliani a bump in the polls, just because he happened to be the mayor of New York on 9/11. New York would have survived fine without him.
Sadly there will be more such talk in the coming days. Resist it. Can’t this incident just be seen as what it is? It’s a tragedy for Pakistan and Bhutto’s family. Making it more than that is just ghoulish.
Hot Air has detailed coverage of the fatal attack.
