JudyGate Deepens

Giuliani ConcernedAs I suspected, there’s more to alleged misuse of funds story than at first reported. The question is, what more is there that we have yet to find out? Unfortunately, I cannot predict future revelations. But the least I can do is to bring the story up to date.

First of all, the “JudyGate” label doesn’t really get at the heart of the issue. This is not so much about the affair, which most people who have been paying attention were already aware of. The core issue is the misuse of taxpayer money to maintain, hide and service an ongoing adulterous affair. While cheating on a spouse and engaging in adultery is bad enough, it’s the diversion of public funds for frivolous personal use that’s the problem here. Put more simply, it’s the money, stupid.

Well before it was publicly known he was seeing her, then-married New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani provided a police driver and city car for his mistress Judith Nathan, former senior city officials tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com.

“She used the PD as her personal taxi service,” said one former city official who worked for Giuliani.

Does that sound appropriate to you? Is that good judgement? Is that the correct use of public funds? The correct answer is no.

The former officials told ABCNews.com the extra costs involved overtime and per diem costs for officers traveling with Giuliani to secret weekend rendezvous with Nathan in the fashionable Hamptons resort area on Long Island.

Sorry, we can’t tell you about it; it’s secret.

“The Comptroller’s Office made repeated requests for the information in 2001 and 2002 but was informed that due to security concerns the information could not be provided,” a spokesperson for the comptroller’s office said.

Rudy and Judy GiulianiIf these allegations are true, and it really looks like they are, it would be very unwise to give this unprincipled and egomaniacal man access to Federal funds and The White House. He clearly has either intentionally misused city funds or let it happen on purpose.

Rudy’s excuses to date, including that he had nothing to do with the accounting, doesn’t wash and doesn’t really matter one whit. I don’t care if he didn’t fill out the paperwork himself. But as an executive, he is ultimately responsible for what those working under him do. It seems that as far as misuse of funds for his own benefit and that of his mistress, Rudy just didn’t care.

Considering that this security detail for his mistress stopped for a short time when first reported in the press and then quietly restarted months later demonstrates that someone knew that it was wrong. And the responsibility for that lies with America’s Mayor, Rudolph W. Giuliani, alone.

Sorry Rudy. I cannot trust you. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I won’t get fooled again.

Update: Drip, drip, drip. NYPD Chief Casts Doubt on Giuliani Expense Story. Clarification: doubt is being cast on Giuliani’s “nothing to see here” story. Rudy’s new strategy for dealing with questions about this?

In South Carolina today, Giuliani declined to offer any further explanation, saying, “We’ve already explained it.”

Yeah, right. It’s old news now. Time to move on (to the next scandal). Hopefully bloggers and the press won’t let Rudy shake them off the trail that easily.

Update 2: And still there’s more.  City taxpayers picked up tab for Judith Giuliani’s visit to kin in Pennsylvania.

In the fall of 2001, city cops chauffeured Rudy Giuliani’s then-mistress, Judith Nathan, to her parents’ Pennsylvania home 130 miles away on the taxpayers’ dime.

But don’t worry about it.  Rudy “already explained it.”  Just get over it already, you darn rubberneckers.  It was a pre-debate smear.  It doesn’t matter.  Pay no mind to the man behind the curtain.  Hey, look over there!

Well, duh. A lot of us have known his modus operandi for a long long time. Why people are only paying attention now, while good, is still baffling. Like an “old school” grandmother I knew used to say: “Introduce me to your friends and I’ll tell you what you are.”

Ha ha, well put Jack. Unfortunately a lot of people don’t pay attention so we’ve got to keep repeating the obvious.

I’ve noticed a lot of people seem to think this is about Rudy screwing around with his girlfriend. They don’t seem to get the corruption part. Wake up, folks!
